SJE Rhombus goes beyond standard products for advanced training

SJE Rhombus held their second annual advanced training on Oct. 15 and 16. They had 18 attendees from around North America who came to gain more in-depth knowledge of the industry. Topics covered included electrical theory, level sensing, VFDs and controls. There was also considerable time devoted to working hands-on with panels. “My favorite part about the advanced training was getting hands-on experience with the products and panels, while being able to talk to the people who designed and built the products,” said Kevin Corstorphine, an account representative from Pump Tech Inc. “It gave great insight into why they were designed the way they were and let you explore some otherwise lesser known features.” Attendees were a mix of standard and engineered representatives, distributors and original equipment manufacturers. Although it is an advanced training, Corstorphine said it can be useful to a wide variety of experience levels, both in terms of industry experience and SJE product familiarization. It also gives SJE Rhombus the chance to talk directly with customers and get feedback. “It’s great when we are discussing a new product or showing everyone how to use an existing product and they are asking questions or saying things like ‘I didn’t know that!’ or ‘this would be a nice feature to add,’” said SJE Rhombus product manager Josh Erckenbrack. In addition to presentations and hands-on panel time, attendees got a tour of the Detroit Lakes facility. SJE Rhombus staff and attendees also got together for a dinner on Wednesday as an opportunity to have fun and continue to build relationships.

SJE hosts Latin America training

On August 19, SJE hosted international training with attendees from Latin America. This product training gave Spanish-speaking attendees the opportunity to learn about SJE products in a hands-on environment and to get a better perspective of SJE. “My favorite part of the training is the cultural exchange. Also, the customers sharing their field experiences with the SJE control panels and components,” said William Gonzalez, the design engineer on the Spanish team. Attendees arrived in Detroit Lakes on Sunday and spent time at the SJE headquarters there. They toured the facility and went through product training. Topics covered included SJE Rhombus standard products, PRIMEX custom panels, VFDs and the PRIMEX Pump Watch Remote Monitoring System. Sessions were all held in Spanish. “I hope that our distributors have obtained the greatest possible learning of everything that SJE Rhombus and PRIMEX manufacture,” said Marieangie Escobar, international customer service representative. “But above all, I hope they know that they can always count on our support.” On Wednesday, they travelled to Minneapolis to tour SJE’s New Hope and Plymouth facilities. They also got the opportunity to attend a Twins baseball game and visit the Mall of America. This year there were 18 attendees from many Latin American countries, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Guatemala, Colombia and Nicaragua.

new values launch

SJE Releases New Purpose Statement, Values

After over 15 years, local pump controls manufacturer SJE has released a new purpose statement and values. The goal was to simplify the values and make them more impactful for its 443 employees, about 240 of whom work in the Detroit Lakes headquarters. The new purpose statement is: “United as employee owners, we improve lives and positively impact communities around the world by providing exceptional control solutions.” Suckert highlighted the importance of corporate citizenship in the statement. Through the SJE Foundation and the Charitable Funds Committee, SJE’s employee owners help choose how they would like to make a positive impact on the community. SJE donates to many charities and events at its different locations, such as the United Way and the Heart Walk. She explained that SJE also generates wealth among its employee owners, which then spreads around the community. The values were released each day in videos that President and CEO Dave Thomas shared with the employee owners via email. These light-hearted videos took a different approach than simply explaining the values. Instead, the team responsible for the values release decided to create short cartoons featuring employee owners in theoretical situations that explain why each value is important. Thomas and Suckert both featured as cartoon versions of themselves. “This is a project that’s been in the works now for over a year, and these values have been chosen very carefully to reflect our evolution as a company, as well as our goals moving forward as we write the next chapter in the history of SJE,” said Thomas. The new values are unity, humility, agility, drive and ownership. Ownership in particular plays a unique part in SJE’s culture because the company is 100% employee owned. “As an employee owned company, we know that culture is really important and a big part of what makes a place great to work,” said Vice President of Human Resources Natasha Nodsle. “We currently have several positions open and hope that these new values really resonate with both current and future employees.” At the end of the week after all the videos were released, employee owners also received a backpack and mug with a corporate seal that had values logo printed on them. Between the videos and the employee gifts, the release was designed to be a fun kick-off to what will eventually become a long-term part of SJE’s culture. “We wanted to do something fun and different to really catch people’s attention with this release,” said digital designer Linda Norland, who filmed the videos. “Values can be such a critical part of company culture if taken to heart.”

SJE celebrates grand opening of new facility in Ashland, OH

SJE held a Grand Opening Thursday, March 28, 2019, to celebrate the completion of their new 51,000 sq. ft. facility located in Ashland, Ohio. Over 60 visitors attended the event, which included a ribbon cutting, tours, product demos and refreshments. President & CEO Dave Thomas cut the ribbon outside the new building despite a sprinkling of rain. Afterwards, visitors went inside to look at the facility. Ashland employees offered tours of the new building and gave product demos. Persons in attendance included the mayor of Ashland, Matt Miller, as well as SJE’s business partners, building contractors and officials from the city and county. “This is a larger facility than we had previously and we’re all on one floor, which improves communication and collaboration, and just gives us a chance to continue to grow and expand,” Thomas said. “We’re anticipating significant growth in our panel products and we do a lot of panel manufacturing here in Ashland.” After the grand opening, an internal event was held for employees and their families. Employees had the opportunity to show their loved ones their new workspace. To end the fun, they used an overhead crane to break a bottle of champagne against the wall in the warehouse, christening the new building. The new facility is located at 2221 Ford Drive in the Ashland Business Park. SJE acquired CSI Controls in 2008 and manufactures products in Ashland for all three of its brands (CSI Controls, PRIMEX and SJE Rhombus). About 65 employees work at this branch. “The future is bright for this location, for the employees here,” Thomas said. “We’ve invested a lot in making this a permanent home for us.”

CSI Controls Introduces CSION™ Indoor Alarm System

CSI Controls® introduces the CSION™ indoor alarm system, a sleek new alarm featuring a modern design and easy installation. This new alarm helps protect homes from potentially costly damage due to flooding, pump failure or freezing pipes and is perfect for any homeowner. When the tank level rises, the high-water float activates the alarm (audible and visual) to alert the homeowner of potentially threatening liquid level conditions. The sleek design of the CSION™ alarm incorporates an LED alarm light ring that illuminates red for alarm one and amber for alarm two. Two sensor inputs allow users the flexibility to choose which separate liquid level conditions to monitor. The alarm features a large, easy-to-use test/silence button located conveniently on the front of the enclosure. Simply press to test or silence the alarm. The light ring will stay illuminated as long as the alarm condition exists. The CSION™ also monitors low temperature conditions. When the temperature drops below 40°F (4°C), the low temperature indicator LED turns from green to red and the alarm sounds to alert the homeowner of the condition. This function can be disabled in cold climates. The “Power On” LED indicator light illuminates green for primary power, amber for battery backup and red when battery backup is low. The alarm will chirp when the battery is low. In addition, the CSION™ includes auxiliary contacts for attachment of remote devices and has an automatic alarm reset. The switching mechanism operates on low voltage and is isolated from the power line to reduce the possibility of shock. The complete package includes a standard Control Duty Narrow Angle Low Current Mechanical Float control switch. The CSION™ is CSA Certified and covered by CSI Controls’ three-year limited warranty.
